If you’re one of the many people who’ve tried jumping from X (formerly Twitter) to Meta’s Threads but felt like you had to start all over — good news! Threads is testing a new feature that could make your switch a lot smoother.
What’s New?
Meta has started testing a tool in Threads that helps you follow the same creators you already follow on X. In short, if you’ve built a carefully curated list of must-see creators, news accounts, meme lords, or industry insiders on X, Threads wants to help you bring that list over.
According to Meta spokesperson Alec Booker, the feature is designed to help users “find and follow creators from other platforms,” making it easier to stay connected to the content and conversations that matter most.
Why Does This Matter?
Since the rise of alternative platforms like Threads and Bluesky, many creators have left X. The problem? They often leave their massive follower counts behind — and their followers? Stuck playing social media detective trying to find where their faves went.
For users, this has made rebuilding their communities on new platforms kind of a nightmare. This new feature is trying to solve that.
How Does It Work?
While the feature is still in beta testing, here’s what we know so far:
– Some users opening the Threads app are seeing a pop-up message saying they can now “Find popular creators from X.”
– Clicking this message leads to instructions on how to download your following list from X and import it directly into Threads.
– The focus is currently on helping users find popular creators — so not every single account you follow may show up (at least for now).
The tool was first spotted by tech sleuth Jane Manchun Wong, a well-known researcher who often digs up upcoming social media features before they’re officially announced.
It’s still unclear exactly how Meta is matching X profiles with Threads accounts (like, is it username-based? Magic? Tech wizardry?). Meta hasn’t spilled all the technical details yet, and they didn’t respond to further questions from TechCrunch about the process.
So, Is Threads Catching Up?
It seems like it! In January 2025, Meta reported that Threads had grown to over **320 million monthly active users**, up from 300 million the month before. That’s not too far off from X’s numbers, depending on how each platform defines “active users.”
With steady growth and smart features like this one, Threads is slowly positioning itself as a strong alternative to X — especially for users looking to stay connected to their favorite content without rebuilding everything from scratch.
