Threads—Meta’s slightly cooler, slightly confused cousin of Instagram—is finally getting what every app in the digital playground already has: a damn DM inbox. YES. It’s 2025, and Threads just realized we like to talk privately. GASP!

Mark “I Invented Facebook While Wearing Flip-Flops” Zuckerberg announced today that Threads is testing a separate, standalone, gloriously isolated DM inbox. No more needing to teleport over to Instagram like it’s 2017 just to say, “LOL” or “wyd?” This isn’t just evolution, baby—it’s REVOLUTION… with a lowercase “r” and a soft launch.

But don’t get too excited unless you’re currently living in Hong Kong, Thailand, or Argentina—AKA Meta’s official guinea pig squad. That’s right. The rest of us have to wait while they test it out in select corners of the globe like it’s some exclusive underground speakeasy for messages. “Can I get into the Threads DMs?” “Sorry, name’s not on the list.”

But wait—there’s more!
These DMs are currently only for one-on-one conversations. So no group chats, no chaotic 2AM group selfies, no heated discussions about which Kardashian reigns supreme. Just you, another human (or bot), and your questionable grammar choices.

Now, for those keeping receipts, Threads users have been side-eying Meta for months over the lack of proper messaging. Because let’s be real: people on Threads are NOT necessarily the same brunch crowd from Instagram. Some of us haven’t opened IG since avocado toast was trendy. (Which was, like, yesterday… but still.)

To recap the mess:

  • In 2023, Instagram was all like, “Maybe we’ll just share the same inbox with Threads! Efficient, right?”
  • Then Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head honcho, went, “Wait. People don’t follow the same accounts on both apps?!”
  • Cut to 2025: Threads is like, “We heard you wanted to send private messages without jumping through five Meta-branded flaming hoops. So here you go.”

Meanwhile… in the Battle of the DMs:

  • Bluesky (that other app your cousin tried for 4 days) dropped DMs like a mic back in May 2024.
  • Elon Musk, never one to be out-bonkered, launched XChat for X (née Twitter), which includes group chats, disappearing messages, and allegedly the ability to send files, memes, and maybe even your hopes and dreams.

So yeah, Threads is late to the DM party. Like, it showed up after the pizza’s gone, the music’s off, and someone’s asleep on the floor. But hey—it finally showed up. With a bottle of wine and a promise to do better.

Stay tuned for group chats. Maybe by 2030. 😌
