Best WordPress Survey Plugins to Gather User Data and Opinions

Ever wondered how you can create a survey on WordPress? That is an easy one to answer – use a WordPress survey plugin!

Surveys have so many uses on a website. Firstly, you can use them to gather data about your site’s visitors, get opinions on new products, obtain peoples’ views on specific topics – the list is virtually limitless. Secondly, the data gleaned from survey responses can be automatically collated and presented attractively on your site to inform users – think bar or pie charts. However, best of all, polls and surveys bring an interactive element to your site, which helps increase engagement.

What Do WordPress Survey Plugins Do?

WordPress survey plugins allow you to integrate surveys and polls into your website easily and then gather data and present the results in various ways. Most plugins offer customization options, meaning your surveys can match your site’s branding. Furthermore, some also allow you to export data for use in spreadsheets, marketing materials, reports, presentations, etc., which is ideal for business-type use cases

This article will show you seven great plugins to help you add and manage polls and surveys on your site.

Key Features To Look For in WordPress Survey Plugins

The features included with the various survey plugins vary considerably, and in general, the paid ones offer much more functionality than freebies.

The following list details some typical features available with the various plugins. However, which plugin you choose ultimately depends on what you want it to do. Therefore, use this list as a guide to what is available rather than essential features as you might not need all of them:

  • Drag and drop builders or visual editors to allow you to create polls quickly with little or no coding knowledge
  • Built-in pre-made templates for super-fast poll creation or if you are stuck for ideas
  • A variety of result presentation options, such as pie charts, text, percentage, etc.
  • Customization options to tailor the look of the surveys and results to your site
  • Social sharing buttons to attract more people to your polls and share the results with a broader audience
  • Option to display real-time survey results once a user has submitted their response
  • Device responsiveness to ensure your polls and surveys look good and work well on any type of device
  • Measures to prevent multiple submissions from participants
  • Admin notifications of when a response is received
  • Facilities to export collected data to spreadsheets or presentations such as Microsoft PowerPoint

The Best WordPress Survey Plugins Currently Available

I have briefly touched on what survey plugins do and the typical features you might need. So, let’s now jump right to the best ones currently available in the WordPress world.

Formidable Forms

Formidable Forms wordpress survey plugin

Formidable Forms has a formidable following – over 300k active downloads from the WordPress plugin directory alone, where it scores an impressive 4.7/5.0 stars with users.

It is little wonder that this plugin has such a huge fan base given what it can do. Although the name makes you think it only creates forms, it bundles powerful survey and quiz tools, too. These allow you to design and run polls on your site with plenty of customization possibilities to catch the attention of both regular and passing visitors.

The free version is obviously more basic than the premium one, but it still gives you helpful features such as:

  • Drag and drop form builder and visual style creator to quickly create and customize forms and quizzes
  • Style, color, size, and text customization options
  • Format, filter, and display submissions
  • Quiz maker forms with automatic grading
  • Limit submissions to one entry per user, IP address, or cookie
  • Conditional redirection after form/quiz submission
  • Variety of graph and chart types
  • Submission-triggered notifications and autoresponders
  • Twilio integration to collect feedback, votes, and poll responses via SMS text or receive SMS notifications when entries are received
  • Invisible spam protection
  • Device responsive
  • Wide range of form creation and management features
  • HTML access for deep customization
  • Import and export submissions

That list is far from exhaustive but covers most of the survey-related features.

Prices for the premium version of Formidable Forms start at $79 per year for one site, rising to $599 for unlimited sites and access to every feature. All the premium plans include the following additional core features amongst others:

  • Unlimited forms and monthly entries
  • Create multi-page polls with a progress bar
  • Users can review their survey responses before submitting
  • Additional customization options
  • Seamless styling
  • Smart conditional logic
  • Wide range of importable templates
  • File uploads
  • Multi-page forms
  • Updates and support
  • 14-day moneyback guarantee

Given the functionality offered with the free version, I believe it would be ideal for most users. Furthermore, after trying it out, you can upgrade to the premium version and use the moneyback guarantee if it doesn’t suit you.

 Total Poll

 Total Poll wordpress survey plugin

Total Poll is a freemium plugin that helps you add polls to your site so that you can instantly gather feedback from your audience. It is easy to set up and use, and you will have active polls on your site in no time.

The free version has an extensive list of key features, for example:

  • Drag and drop editing with live preview
  • Built-in templates
  • Custom fields
  • Create simple polls, and image, audio, and video contests
  • Various configurable restrictions, for example, date, IP address, members only, etc.
  • Variety of voting choices, i.e., multiple-choice, other field, or shuffled
  • Various options for displaying and hiding results
  • Customization options, such as field, fonts, colors, etc.
  • Device responsive
  • SEO optimized
  • Graphical poll insights and analytics
  • Developer tools

That’s a good bundle of features for a freebie, in my opinion. However, should you wish, you can expand your arsenal of tools by upgrading to Total Poll Pro. That costs $59 per year for one site and gives access to various add-ons like charts, Google Analytics, live polling, vote weighting, and more. In addition, trying Pro is risk-free, thanks to a 30-day moneyback guarantee.

The refreshing simplicity of Total Poll makes it a great option if you are new to survey plugins. The free version has great functionality, while Pro adds some handy extras for a reasonable price.

Total Poll has a 4.3/5.0 star user rating, and over a thousand free version downloads exist.

Modal Survey

My final plugin in this list is Modal Survey, another excellent, reasonably priced option for creating polls, surveys, and quizzes. The plugin is easy to use, letting you develop attention-grabbing surveys customized to match your brand. Furthermore, it provides a range of options for presenting results. It is also possible to add countdown timers, a proven method of encouraging visitors to take action and participate in your poll, survey, or quiz.

Modal Survey is a premium plugin with no free version offered. However, don’t worry, as it costs just $39 on Code Canyon. That is an exceptional value, as you get a good bundle of features thrown into the package, including:

  • Visual builder
  • Wide range of customization and formatting options
  • Unlimited surveys, questions, and answers
  • Popup or embedded polls which can be custom sized
  • Create trivia type quizzes with Facebook sharing
  • Text, select box, rating, and numerical answer types
  • Conditional statements to display a specific message or redirect to a URL
  • Quiz timer
  • Progress bar
  • Images support
  • Six result display chart types – pie, donut, bar, radar, line, and polar
  • Display individual charts based on the participant’s score
  • Detailed statistics and analytics
  • Export results to CSV, XLS, PDF, XML, and JSON
  • GDPR compliant
  • Updates and six months support (extendible to a year for an additional $12.75)

Modal Survey has a 4.79/5.00 user score, so people clearly like it. I think it offers excellent value, and I particularly like the fact that you can create some fun, social-sharable quizzes, which are always a great way of boosting engagement and driving traffic to your site.

Opinion Stage

Opinion Stage wordpress survey plugin

Opinion Stage is a freemium WordPress survey plugin specifically for creating any type of poll, survey, and quiz, either from scratch or using one of the plentiful ready-made templates to save time and inspire you.

The free version is considerably more basic than the premium one, but it still gives you features such as:

  • Style, color, size, and text customization options
  • Extensive library of free templates
  • Add images and videos
  • Pre-configured color themes and fonts
  • Display results in real-time
  • Optional CTA at the end of surveys, polls, and quizzes
  • Social network integration for sharing
  • Email notification of submissions
  • Branch logic to tailor questions based on last question response
  • Basic reports
  • Multiple responsive layouts
  • Limited to 250 views per month
  • Device responsive
  • Integrates with CRM and marketing platforms such as Hubspot, MailChimp, etc.
  • Over 40 languages supported
  • CSS override for customization

That’s a lot of features for a freebie. However, the 250 views per month limit may be too restrictive for busier sites, in which case a paid plan will be more suitable. These cost between $228 and $2228 per year and give 10,000 to a million views per month depending on the plan selected. Monthly plans are also available, and while they are a little more expensive month-on-month, they could be an ideal option if you only create polls and surveys occasionally.

All paid plans include the following additional core features, with the more expensive subscriptions adding even more:

  • Block multiple submissions
  • Scheduled end date
  • Require social login to allow participation
  • Option to include a lead capture form
  • Export results
  • Updates and support
  • 7-day free trial

The Opinion Stage website has lots of demos for you to see what it can do, and I must say, it does make impressive surveys and polls. The only downsides of this plugin are the limited number of views included with the free one and the price of the paid plans – $228 per year is a lot to pay for more than 250 but far fewer than 10k views per month. Therefore, it would be better if the developer offered cheaper options for less-trafficked sites. However, it is still worth trying out the free one, especially if you run just a few polls and surveys on a low-traffic site.

Please be aware that this plugin requires you to register, something many people object to. However, the upside is that you can create polls, surveys, and quizzes without needing the plugin at all; instead, you build them in the Opinion Stage website and use an embed code to place them on your site.

Opinion Stage has a 4.4/5.0 user score in the WordPress directory, and over 10k active downloads are in operation.

Responsive Poll

Responsive Poll wordpress survey plugin

Responsive Poll’s unique selling point is the developer created it with mobile devices in mind. Therefore, it is fully responsive, adapting the poll content to display perfectly regardless of whether visitors are using a tablet, mobile, or desktop.

Understandably, the free version of Responsive Poll does not have all the functionality of the premium version. However, it is perfectly adequate for adding basic but attractive polls or surveys to your site, plus the number of views is unrestricted. This version includes features such as:

  • Drag and drop sorting
  • Built-in themes
  • Predefined or user-defined colors for each answer
  • Add images or videos, i.e., YouTube, Vimeo, or MP4
  • Text instead of results
  • Create questions in any language
  • Unlimited answers in one poll
  • Shortcodes to add polls where you need them, including sidebars or widget areas
  • Clone buttons to duplicate polls and themes

Premium upgrades are great value, with a one-site license costing just $15, while $25 covers up to five. What’s more, these upgrades bring some useful extras:

  • Customizable themes
  • Custom voting button styes
  • Range of styling options and font styles
  • Limit entries by cookie or IP Address
  • Definable start and end dates
  • Option to display real-time survey results after a user has submitted their response
  • Express results numerically, as a percentage, or both
  • Image and video motioning
  • Voter location
  • Option to edit results
  • Updates and support (6/12 months depending on the chosen plan)

Responsive Poll is worth trying if you want to add polls to your site but have little or no budget at your disposal. In particular, the premium plans offer great value and include customization options that can really make your surveys stand out. Furthermore, the plugin enjoys a 4.7/5.0 star rating in the WordPress download directory, so it must be pretty good.

YOP Poll

YOP Poll

Even in its free form, YOP Poll allows you to schedule when your polls start and finish, plus you can also run multiple ones simultaneously. That is a real benefit if you regularly run lots of polls. Moreover, this WordPress survey plugin is simple to use and requires no coding knowledge.

Downloading the free version of YOP Poll gives you plenty of other useful features, for example:

  • Create unlimited polls
  • Intervene in polls at any time to edit or delete them
  • Clone button to duplicate polls
  • Add polls to sites by simply inserting a poll ID
  • Add single or multiple polls to a site
  • Display results in real-time
  • Display active polls randomly where more than one is running concurrently
  • Custom fields for gathering additional exportable information from voters
  • Variety of display options for poll results
  • Vote duplication prevention
  • Single or multiple answers
  • Stat reset option
  • Sortable and searchable backend poll list
  • Option to display archived poll results

In my opinion, that is a handy toolbox for getting polls and surveys onto your site quickly, easily, and for free.

For those of you who love features, you might want to upgrade to YOP Poll Pro. That costs just $17 for one site, rising to $57 for seven domains, and those are on-off rather than recurring payments. Pro adds the following key features:

  • 30 pre-made customizable templates
  • Single or multiple questions
  • Image and text slider questions
  • Allow participation via Facebook and Google login
  • Display results in pie chart form
  • Countdown timer
  • Updates and support
  • 30-day moneyback guarantee

Responsive Poll is worth considering as even the free version offers enough functionality to be very useful. What’s more, the Pro version extends that functionality further but for very little financial outlay. Therefore, I am not surprised that it has a 4.4/5.0 star user rating and 20k downloads of the free version in operation.

Survey Monkey

Survey Monkey

SurveyMonkey is a leading WordPress survey plugin. The developers proudly claim that a third of a million organizations globally use it to gather user feedback. It is easy to use and feature-rich, allowing you to include popup or embedded-type surveys anywhere on a page. Furthermore, an extensive range of customization tools means you can get your polls looking and behaving precisely how you want them.

A free version of Survey Monkey, which is, of course, thin on features, is available. However, it may be enough if you just want to create the occasional basic poll or quiz. Here are some of the key elements of that so you can judge for yourself:

  • Create unlimited surveys
  • Limitations: Maximum ten questions, 40 response views, and three collectors per survey
  • 40 pre-made short survey templates
  • Video and image questions
  • Popup online surveys
  • Progress bar
  • Configurable survey end date
  • Require answer completion before proceeding
  • Submit responses via the website or social media
  • Track email responses
  • Protect surveys with passwords
  • IP blocking
  • Limited analytics
  • iOS and Android apps

That is a good selection of features, although the limitations do mean the free version is only really suited to low-traffic sites or if you are just an occasional user.

Various upgrade options for personal and business users are available. In my opinion, the best value personal plan is ‘Advantage Annual,’ costing €432 (Euros, not dollars!) per year. That is quite an investment, but if you need to create lots of polls or have a heavily trafficked site, it could be an excellent one as it adds features such as:

  • View up to 5,000 responses each month
  • Unlimited number of collectors and questions per survey
  • Create recurring and multilingual surveys
  • Variety of question types, i.e., matrix, rating, ranking, ad slider question types
  • Question and page randomizer
  • A/B testing
  • Deeper customizations, for example, colors, fonts, etc.
  • 180 pre-made short survey templates
  • Contact information collection
  • Inactivity timer and passcode lock
  • Stripe payments
  • More analytical and reporting tools, including download to CSV, XLS, or PDF
  • Updates and support

Survey Monkey is the ideal option if you need to create lots of polls and surveys as it has superb functionality and an excellent reputation. The free version has some limitations, but you can use it to see how well the plugin works for you before upgrading.

What Is Your Favorite WordPress Survey Plugin?

In conclusion, I have shown that some free versions of survey plugins can have limited features or restrictions on usage. That will not be much of an issue for lesser trafficked sites that only run surveys, polls, or quizzes occasionally. However, sites with high traffic volumes or regularly running polls and surveys will need a premium plan, but there are options available to suit all budgets.

Do you run surveys, polls, or quizzes on your website? If so, do you find they help keep visitors engaged, and do you think they drive extra traffic to your site? And what is your favorite WordPress survey plugin? Let me know in the comments section below.
